Common Contaminants Found in Your Ductwork

Keeping your home's ductwork clean is an important part of maintaining your indoor air quality. Some of the most common pollutants and potential irritants we regularly clean out include:

  • Dust: Dust, pollen and other pollutants build up in the ducts, causing allergies to act up. The question is not if you should get your ducts professionally cleaned, but rather how often. The answer: every three to five years, according to the National Air Duct Cleaners Association. You'll also want to make sure you're changing the air filter every 30 to 90 days.
  • Dust Mites: Dust mites feed on the shed skin cells of humans and pets, which there is a disturbing amount of in your ducts. Dust mites themselves relatively harmless. Their feces, though, contain an enzyme that can cause serious allergic reactions if inhaled: something that's hard to avoid when the feces are circulated in the air. Symptoms of such reactions include runny noses, sneezing and itchy eyes. Asthma-like symptoms may also arise like wheezing and having difficulty breathing.
  • Mold: Your air ducts may have fulfilled the three requirements for mold growth: humidity levels above 60%, temperatures between 75 and 85 degrees and the presence of water from condensation. In such a case, you may begin to notice an odor like that of dirty socks coming from the ductwork. By then, there may already be a full-blown infestation. This fungus can wreak havoc on your indoor air quality and physical health. Minor symptoms range from sneezing and a sore throat to itchy eyes. In extreme cases, one may develop long-term respiratory problems, trouble concentrating and anxiety.
  • Rodents: If your air ducts offer a warm refuge from the cold outside, then they will certainly attract mice and rats. These pests are a major health concern; inhaling or ingesting their urine, feces or saliva can lead to the transmission of hantavirus, for example, which, in turn, can lead to a lung infection. Dead rodents are not necessarily a rare sight in air ducts, either. They will emit a foul smell and should be removed immediately (and, preferably, by a professional).
