Home Remodel Checklist

Summer is the perfect time to remodel your home. You've probably gotten your tax refund, and that can provide you with a few thousand to put toward the project. However, before you decide to renovate your home, you'll want to consider a few things to make sure the process goes smoothly.

Set a Budget

So, you have a rough estimate of the overall cost of the project. That’s great. Now, make your budget as detailed as possible. Here are a few pointers:

The project will cost more than you think: If you have money set aside for the project, give your budget some flexibility. Save for at least 10 percent more than you expect the project to cost. This will help cover unforeseen expenses.

Budget for mistakes: Reserve another 5% of your budget to address any renovation mistakes made along the way. Maybe you’ll find that you don’t like a certain material or plumbing fixture after installation. That sort of miscalculation won’t sink your budget if you have money earmarked for mistakes.

Create a Timeline

Depending on the scope of your project, it could take weeks or months. Whichever the case, it will most certainly take longer than you think, so plan accordingly. Here’s a good estimate for other phases of the project:

Bidding phase: 2 to 3 weeks

HOA and city permitting: About a month

Establish a Plan

You'll want to set down what exactly you want to change about your home's current layout. This will help you when you go to set your budget. It will also help your contractor know what to expect when he or she writes up a bid to complete your remodeling project.

If you're adding onto your home, you might want to ensure that your contractor is able to keep your HVAC system operational as much as possible. This will be even more important if you're completing your renovation during the summer.

Interview Contractors

Choosing the right contractor is probably the most important point to consider. A contractor that shows up every day and works hard to complete the job in a timely fashion for a fair price is key. You'll want to interview prospective contractors to find the one that's right for you. Take into account online reviews. Also, ask for references.
