How to Prepare for Allergy Season

Allergies in San Jose

The stuffy heads, itchy noses, and scratchy throats are making their annual comeback whether you’re ready or not! As the winds and seasons change, irritating airborne pollutants like dust and pollen settle wherever they can. To keep these pollutants out of your home and sinuses, it’s essential to improve your indoor air quality.

If you and your family get hit hard with the symptoms of allergy season, read on for a few of the DG Heating & Air Conditioning teams’ favorite ways to guard your home against allergens.

Clean

Now more than ever, it’s important to keep up with your chores. Dirty surfaces means dirty air. Make sure you’re dusting shelves, tables, and other furniture weekly. And don’t forget your floors! Break out the mop and vacuum at least once a week to rid your home of even more potentially harmful allergens.

Pro Tip: Do you share your home with a furry friend or two? Dog and cat dander can add to your allergy symptoms. If you have pets, we recommend cleaning more often to pick up all that extra fur! Remember to vacuum the couch, bed, and any other spots your pets like to hang out.

Windows

While you may be tempted to let a breeze flow through on a beautiful, sunny day, this could make your nose itch even worse! Keep your doors and windows closed to keep pollen and dust outside where they belong.

Air Filters

Air filters are one of the most important tools you can use to cut down on allergens in your home. They work in tandem with your HVAC system to clean and filter the air before it circulates through your home. For maximum protection, be sure to replace your air filters at least every three months. If you’re more sensitive to allergens or live with pets, we recommend changing the filter every month.

Air Purifiers

For an added layer of allergen prevention, consider adding an air purifier to your space. These work like your air filters and filter out those unwanted pollutants. They come in a variety of sizes to fit different sized spaces and can be inconspicuously placed to blend in with the rest of your furniture.
