What is the Best Summertime Thermostat Setting?

Hand adjusting smart thermostat.

No matter where you live, it seems families across the nation all deal with the same problem: the war over the thermostat. Some prefer it to be warmer in the home, while some prefer colder. Whichever side of the scale you are on, the bottom line is that you would like to be comfortable in your home.

As your HVAC specialists, the DG Heating & Air Conditioning team is here to bring peace to your home once again with our recommended thermostat settings.

Setting Your Thermostat

Before we jump into our recommendations, it is important to note that every home is different. Different regions, the amount of natural sunlight in a home, and thermostat placement all have an effect on climate and could affect the comfort of your home.

According to the U.S Department of Energy, a good temperature setting for the summertime while you’re at home is 78 degrees. While this may seem a tad on the warmer side, it is a great way to maximize your HVAC system’s efficiency without making your home unbearably warm.

While away from the home, we recommend setting the temperature even higher, at or around 85 degrees, for even better energy savings. If you have pets, try to not exceed 85 degrees in order to keep them happy and comfortable.

If 78 degrees while at home is too warm for you, we understand! We know everyone’s body responds differently to temperatures. Try lowering the temperature by one or two degrees at a time until you find your “sweet spot” for all members of your household.

How Smart Thermostats Can Help

Installing a smart thermostat is another great way to keep comfortable while saving energy. Smart thermostats allow you to program your schedule into their system, creating a cooling timeline that works for you and your finances.

Say, for example, your home is empty from 8am to 5pm every day while you’re at work. The smart thermostat will adjust the temperature to a warmer setting while you’re away, and begin cooling down as your return approaches, allowing you to walk into a comfortable home.
